Fear Doesn’t Get the Final Word

How to face your fears with unshakable faith in God

Key Verse:
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
— 2 Timothy 1:7

Devotional:
Fear has a way of creeping in quietly and then taking over loudly. It whispers doubts about the future, magnifies our weaknesses, and convinces us we are alone in our struggles. Maybe you’ve felt that before—your chest tightens, your thoughts race, and suddenly, the “what ifs” feel louder than God’s promises.

But Scripture reminds us that fear is not from God. Fear tries to paralyze us, but God gives us power. Fear says we are weak, but God fills us with His love. Fear scatters our thoughts, but God grants us a sound mind.

Think of Peter stepping out of the boat to walk toward Jesus on the water (Matthew 14:29-30). For a moment, his faith carried him. But the wind and waves grew louder than his focus on Jesus. Fear sank him—but Jesus lifted him. That’s the truth we can hold onto: fear doesn’t get the final word. Jesus does.

If fear is something you’ve been carrying lately, know this—you don’t have to fight it alone. There are gentle, faith-filled ways to overcome fear and walk in God’s peace. That’s why we’ve created resources like Conquering Fear: Replace fear with faith, one of our 30-day guided devotional journeys. If this is an area you’re battling, I think it could be a lifeline for you. Learn more here.

Reflection & Prayer Prompt:

  • What fear has been trying to control your thoughts lately?

  • Take a few minutes to write that fear down, and then write a truth from God’s Word to counter it.

  • Imagine handing that fear to Jesus—what would it look like to truly release it?

Faith in Action:
Encourage someone else today who might be feeling fearful. Send a text, a verse, or a prayer to remind them they are not alone.

Prayer:
Lord, You see the fears that weigh on my heart. Thank You that I don’t have to face them alone. Replace my fear with faith, my anxiety with Your peace, and my doubts with confidence in You. Help me keep my eyes fixed on You, even when the wind and waves surround me. Amen.
